Focus Mentors are passionate about improving the livelihood and life chances of children. As all of our programs are based on a one to one ratio, mentoring with Gain Focus Mentors offer a unique service that goes a long way.

What makes a Focus Mentor?

Focus Mentors are passionate about improving the livelihood and life chances of children. They have a powerful impact on young people's lives, through being a consistent, friendly and trustworthy influence on their mentees. As all of our programmes are based on a one to one ratio, mentoring with Gain Focus Mentors offer a unique service that goes a long way.


What does the role entail?

Focus Mentors enjoy a very eclectic and varied role, as each assignment is individualised to the mentee. However the fundamentals of the role, are extremely consistent; which is, of course, pivotal when providing an effective service to young people.


Core Responsibilities of a Focus Mentor

  • Act as a key reference point between the mentee and the school/ multi-agency team
  • Keep a record of mentee's behavioural progress and communicate this to all relevant professionals
  • Advocate for mentee's point of view in review meetings
  • Work to improve mentee's wellbeing through introducing them to relevant community organisations/activities
  • Become a source of trust and consistency for the mentee

What Makes a Focus Teacher?

Focus Teachers are ardent educators, who care deeply about the academic progress of every child they work with. Our Focus Teachers are in the unique position of being able to deliver quality education, both academically and emotionally.


What does the role entail?

Our Focus Tutors work in a peripatetic manner, on a one-to-one basis with each pupil. Following a planned and structured timetable; they co-ordinate the learning of their pupils through planning lessons, communicating with our Learning and Behaviour specialist as well as the assigned Mentors. The tutor's key driver is to ensure that the academic progress of the pupil flourishes alongside the Social, Emotional aspects of the pupil's education.

Looked After Child (LAC)  Education Mentor

As all of our programmes are designed to be delivered on a one to one basis, mentoring with Gain Focus can be truly life changing for everyone involved.

Responsibilities and Duties

Job Description:

The Mentors will work with children referred to Gain Focus via the Virtual School department of Manchester Local Authority. The key aim of the LAC Education Mentor, is to reduce the harmful effects of Social Emotional and Mental Health Difficulties which currently affect the Learner. This is a key role in ensuring that the young person’s current situation does not have a long-term damaging effect to their education and overall wellbeing.

LAC Education Mentor Core Responsibilities:

  • Meet Learner in their home environment
  • Review EHCP/ Behaviour and use findings to inform the construction of a positive behaviour scheme following a consultation with the Learning and Behaviour Specialist
  • Transport Young person between community organisations and educational setting where necessary.
  • Become a key link between the learner and their designated education setting.
  • Liaise with Gain Focus Learning and Behaviour specialist (daily), SENCo, Classroom Teacher's and any other key professionals in pupil's education, to inform them of progress and any developments on a weekly basis.
  • Provide discreet, one to one support to learner; both within and outside the school setting.
  • Using positive reward strategies provided by Gain Focus Ltd; work with the pupil to overcome any Social and Emotional barriers to learning that are identified either prior to, or during your time working with the learner.
  • Advocate for pupil's Social/Emotional environment in multi-agency meetings and, where requested, present pupils progress throughout the time working with the mentor.

Which is why our in-house Learning and Behaviour Specialist has comprised a series of development seminars. These will be available and free of charge to all successful Gain Focus applicants.
  • Employee Wellbeing Programme: When working in challenging environments, which our programmes can be from time to time, stress can often be a factor that is overlooked or ignored. However, this can be detrimental to a person's overall health and wellbeing. To remedy this common issue, Gain Focus offer an employee wellbeing program, which includes a telephone counselling service 24 hours a day 7 days a week, completely free of charge.
  • Remuneration: We value the people that work with us and the time and effort that goes in to carrying out our high-quality behaviour programmes. With this in mind, we aim to pay our Mentors extremely competitive hourly rates starting at £10.00p per hour and rising to £16.00p per hour depending on the level of role. A typical day would be 6 paid hours.

Job Type: Temporary

Salary: £10.00 to £16.00 /hour

What do we expect from our Gain Focus Cover Supervisors (SEMH)?

  • Are you passionate about improving the livelihood and life chances of children?
  • Do you have experience working with young people in a classroom (secondary setting)?
  • Are you applying for a PGCE and looking for more experience to add to your belt?
  • Are you dynamic, caring, flexible and trustworthy in your approach to work?
  • Do you have knowledge of the National Curriculum at KS3 & KS4?

Job Description:

As a Cover Supervisor, based in Manchester, your key aim is to provide a reliable and influential presence to young people in the absence of their Classroom Teacher.

Cover Supervisor Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Covering lessons when the timetabled teacher is unavailable
  • Delivering the cover work provided and communicating this effectively to students
  • Checking that all resources are in order, to deliver the lessons effectively
  • Using positive reward strategies provided by Gain Focus Ltd; work with the students to overcome any Social and Emotional barriers to learning that are identified either prior to, or during your time working with them
  • Aiding students’ learning by responding to questions regarding methods and procedures in lessons
  • Following school policy and procedures when dealing with emergencies or immediate problems
  • Liaising with and reporting back to senior management (within the school) regarding students’ progress
