An Example scenario suitable for a classroom mentor:

I’m starting to worry about Tom, his attendance has dropped significantly & he has refused to complete his work in class this week. Tom’s parents feel they have tried everything
— Tom's Class Teacher

Our Classroom Mentors aim to support children who are beginning to cause concern. These concerns may be linked to a decline in social presentation, attendance or social interaction. Classroom Mentors provide an extra layer of support to young people who's social and/or academic outcomes are suffering as a result.

Gain Focus: Core Principles

Educate

As education professionals, we understand the symbiotic nature of academic attainment and social, emotional wellbeing. A recent study, published by Public Health England in 2014, found that "Pupils with better health and wellbeing are likely to achieve better academically." Gain Focus programmes are built with academic attainment as their foundation, so our learners have a cornerstone from which to build healthy and fulfilled lives.

Inspire

We stand by the adage, "It takes a community to raise a child." So much so, we are creating a community of role-models and educators. Our role models appear in the form of Mentors, Specialist Key Workers and Affiliate Organisations. Our educators, in the form of our trained experienced teachers. Through this rich and diverse community, we inspire young people to engage in life, as well as in education.

Achieve

Tied in to our "education alongside community" approach is the practice of setting realistic, bespoke goals and then achieving them. This is a fundamental theme of every ‘Gain Focus’ programme. Achieving our goals underpins the positive rewards system designed by our in-house Learning and Behaviour Specialist.
